There was little doubt about the major talking point among North Sea OSV players in June, with Statoil awarding long-term deals to a host of vessel owners that will result in the construction of seven newbuild PSVs. The Norwegian energy giant has awarded term contracts lasting either three or six years firm to Norway-based owners Farstad Shipping, Atlantic Offshore, Mokster Shipping, Rem0y Shipping and Troms Offshore, for work on the Norwegian Continental Shelf from 2014. The news that a further seven newbuilds have been added to the order book has taken some by surprise, given the fact that supply in the North Sea is already plentiful, but others have commented on a shrewd piece of business by Statoil.
