Captain Wendell Codding Phillips, Jr. was born on April 15, 1916, and raised in Dedham, MA. He was educated in the public schools of Dedham. After a year at the Huntington School for Boys, Wendell entered Tufts College Engineering School where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. During college years, he earned his athletic "T" in both cross-country and outdoor track. After graduation from high school, Wendell enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve at the Boston Navy Yard. He enjoyed the activities and rose to be a signalman third class. Duties varied from "officers steward" to signalman watches on the bridge. These experiences developed into a love for the Navy. Wendell was given a medical discharge because of being underweight for his height when called to extended active duty in October, 1940.
