摘要

During the 2015-2016 austral summer, the iconic Great Barrier Reef (GBR) of Australia experienced a coral bleaching event that impacted the northern part of the reef complex. Over 80% of reefs surveyed in the northern third of the GBR were impacted and overall, across the entire GBR, 29% of coral cover was lost. Sadly, in 2016-17, a second bleaching event occurred with an estimate, for both events, of over 50% of reefs across the GBR seeing some level of coral mortality. The Torres Strait, to the north of the GBR Marine Park, was also impacted and experienced its first observed mass coral bleaching event in 2015- 16; the area was also impacted again in 2016- 17, although to a lesser extent.
