Operational systems to predict storm surges and high tides around the United Kingdom (UK) have been run daily at the Met Office since 1978. The predictions are used by the UK Flood Forecast Centre to provide guidance to the Environment Agency's regional centres on the risk of coastal flooding from a few hours to more than five days in advance. Sixty years after the 1953 disaster in which more than 300 people on the east coast of the UK alone lost their lives, coastal flooding is still one of the highest items on the national risk register.
