Perceptions of Gulf of St. Lawrence coastal communities confronting environmental change: Hazards and adaptation, Quebec, Canada

摘要

The analysis of geoscience data on coastal dynamics provides a better understanding of residents' perceptions and shows that respondents are generally very aware of the causes of coastal erosion. Scientific studies can profit by integrating the knowledge of coastal communities since it allows researchers to identify events that have had a significant impact on coastal systems. Their knowledge can help define, for a given study, the base level from which natural phenomena have effects on the shoreline and how they are likely to affect coastal communities. However, long-term environmental change is difficult for coastal communities to perceive. The task of raising awareness in coastal areas about various coastal hazards, and, most importantly, adaptive measures, remains.
