Factors influencing the decision to leave a fishery and the effects of fishery subsidies: The case of the Spanish purse seine fishery

The present study presents new evidence regarding the factors that influence the exit decisions of vessels from fisheries, especially the effects of fishery subsidies. To estimate and better understand the impact of a set of variables on the exit rate of the Spanish purse seine fleet, we use parametric analysis of duration models. The Gamma accelerated failure-time (AFT) model with inverse Gaussian heterogeneity was found to be the best-fitting model.
