Employers are being reminded to ensure they adequately assess the risks of hazardous work, after an employee at a firm which applies galvanized coatings to steel products received serious burns during an operation involving molten metal.rnThe man was helping to galvanize various metal items, including steel joists. These items were being dipped in a bath of molten zinc. It was during this process that the lifting hooks holding two steel joists, each weighing over one tonne, gave way causing the steel joists to plunge back into the hot dip bath, splattering the employee with 450-degree molten zinc.rnPart of the man's overalls dis-rnsolved and he sustained 12% burns, mainly to his chest and upper arms.rnHereford Galvanizers Ltd pleading guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was fined £13,000. It says it has since improved its safety management and training processes.
