Govt calls for extra time on work hours

The Department of Health has written to the European Commission asking for extra time to implement the 48-hour working week for some trainee doctors.rnFrom 1 August, under the Working Time Directive, doctors in training should not be working more than 48 hours each week, but the DH has had to ask the commission's permission to allow some doctors in training (those working in hospital services delivering 24 hour immediate care) to work 52 hours per week for up to two more years.
