摘要

A contractor has been fined after a 21-year-old labourer drowned while building an extension on a house in London.rnWestminster magistrates court heard that in June 2006, the labourer, who had limited knowledge of English and limited building experience, was instructed by his employer Chris Byrne to fill earth around concrete blocks in an area next to the extension. Mr Byrne removed a board covering a 1.74 metre unguarded excavation pit to show the labourer that it was filled with water. The man was then left alone on thernsite. When Mr Byrne returned later in the day, he found the labourer head first in the unguarded pit, with water up to his waist. He was pronounced dead at the scene. It was the labourer's first day on site.
