￡266,000 fine following telehandler driver's death

Construction company, Hochtief Construction AG, has been fined ￡266,000 after admitting failing to ensure the safety of a contractor working on one of its sites. Telehandler driver, Ondrej Hladik, died in September 2008 when he was crushed by the telehandler's boom when he leant through the vehicle's missing window. Inverness Sheriff Court was told the telehandler he was driving was in extremely poor condition. The most significant of many defects was the large missing window which, had it been in place, would have prevented any part of the driver's body from being exposed to risk of being struck by the boom as it lowered under hydraulic power.
