Worldwide, there were 17 fatal accidents involving mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) in the first half of 2012, according to preliminary results from the International Powered Access Federation's accident database. The causes of the accidents were: electrocution (4), overturn (4), mechanical related (4), fall from platform (4), and entrapment (1). Seven involved vehicle mounts, six involved booms and three involved scissor lifts. In one accident, the machine type was unknown. The accidents occurred in the USA (11), the UK (2), and one each in Australia, the Netherlands, Singapore and Spain.
