The following examples relating to vehicle drivers help highlight some of the problems involved in the selection of suitable footwear in general. 1. A survey of goods vehicle drivers5 identified that only two thirds of sampled drivers were issued with footwear specially designed for their work, although usage levels of slip resistant footwear were high at 88%. The survey identified a clear association between the size of organisation and the likelihood of drivers being provided with work specific footwear. The data also revealed a statistically significant association between organisation size and risk-taking behaviour (such as jumping down to the ground from a vehicle without using ladders or steps) and the likelihood that vehicles were checked and inspected for problems that could cause slip, trip and fall related accidents.
