Outdoor air pollution

The Government has admitted that air pollution is a public health emergency and the biggest single environmental cause of death, causing chronic health conditions and shortening lives. Now a growing coalition of trade unions, safety organisations and green campaign groups is calling on government, regulators and employers to also treat the problem as an occupational health emergency and take action to tackle it. Launching the Government's Clean Air Strategy at the beginning of the year, Health Secretary Matt Hancock made clear that air pollution is a killer, saying it "causes around 36,000 deaths each year, and puts extra, preventable strain on the NHS through increased incidents of heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and child asthma".
