Govt publishes plans for improving building safety following Grenfell Tower fire

The implementation plan, entitled Building a Safer Future, commits the Government to a programme of reform over the coming years to implement the recommendations made by Dame Judith Hackitt in her review of building regulations and fire safety published following the Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017. The Hackitt review looked at the regulatory framework around the construction, maintenance and ongoing use of buildings, with a particular focus on multi-occupied, high-rise residential buildings. It found that the system was not fit for purpose, leaving room for those who wish to take short-cuts to do so, and set out 53 recommendations to establish a new regulatory framework and achieve a culture change to create and maintain safe buildings.
