The GMC has issued new guidance for doctors on confidentiality (pp.6-7) but, after visiting my GP's surgery, I wonder if one particular aspect needs urgent attention: how to balance patient privacy against staff safety. This North London clinic is not atypical in having a reception area where you must speak loudly through a thick glass security window. Communication is made worse by having to peer under various notices sellotaped to the partition.
