Default Retirement Age Is Lawful

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled, effectively, that a default retirement age of 65 does not breach European law, though it is for the High Court to decide if current UK rules are illegal. Under the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006, employees can request to carry on working beyond their 65th birthday, but they have no legal right do so.
