Sharps, Needlesticks And Nurses

More than 4,400 nurses responded to postal survey commissioned by the RCN on the incidence of needlestick injuries (9% response). Almost all (96%) of respondents used needles as part of their jobs and half (48%) had been stuck by a needle or sharp that had previously been used on a patient. One in 10 had sustained an injury in the past year.rnIn 28% of cases-42% among communityon-hospital staff-respondents had not received any advice about the risk of bloodborne infections following the injury. And while 94% of nurses said their employer had a sharps policy, only 55% of respondents had received training from their employer on safe needle use.
