摘要

The government is to scrap Parti of the Equality Act 2010, the duty on local authorities, government, the NHS and other public bodies to consider socio-economic disadvantage in their strategic decisions and policies, particularly in the areas of health, education and housing. Home secretary, and minister for women, Teresa May, announced the government's decision -which was not included in the'Equalities'section of the Coalition's programme for government - on the grounds that equality had become 'associated with the worst aspects of pointless political correctness and social engineering'1. She said:'Just look at the socio-economic duty. In reality, it would have been just another bureaucratic box to be ticked. It would have meant more time filling in forms and less time focusing on policies that will make a real difference to people's life chances/The government has said it intends instead to address'fairness'through non-legislative measures2.
