Hospital hand hygiene A national hand-hygiene campaign has helped reduce rates of hospital-acquired infections across England and Wales, according to research published in the BAAJ The Cleanyourhands campaign2 was rolled out from December 2004 to June 2005 across all 187 acute NHS trusts in England and Wales following concern over high levels of infections and low levels of hand hygiene. Its principal aim was to reduce high levels of Staphylococcus aureus- both the meticillin-resistant (MRSA) and meticillin-sensitive (MSSA) strains - and Clostridium difficile infections that spread through contamination of healthcare workers' hands.
