Many doctors have difficulty with sickness absence certification and assessing work ability.This Swedish study examined whether the introduction of guidelines or education would make a difference to their sickness-certification practices. In Sweden, a sickness absence certificate is required in order to receive sick pay after seven days' absence. Swedish law dictates that the certification should be based on medical grounds alone, not on other issues.To complete the certification, the physician needs to form an opinion on workability.
