HIRTY-ONE major retailers, including M&S, Next,Tesco and Sainsbury's, have signed an accord on fire and buildings safety for the Bangladeshi garment industry following the Rana Plaza disaster in April, which killed over 1,100 people (this issue p.7).The agreement is a welcome development for the millions of garment workers in Bangladesh who desperately need better safety standards. However, figures compiled by the International Labour Organization (ILO) show that an even bigger international tragedy occurs every day, and goes unnoticed and untreated.
