The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has published figures from its annual absence survey, in partnership with the health insurer Simplyhealth, which show that the average level of employee absence fell to 6.6 days per employee in 2013/14, compared with 7.6 days in 2012/13.The analysis is based on surveys completed in June and July 2014 with replies from 518 organisations across the UK representing 1.4 million employees; replies were based on organisations' data from the previous 12 months. Data from the past five years shows a 'fluctuating downward trend' in absence levels in all sectors except manufacturing and production, which has remained static, says the report. Short-term absences of up to seven days accounts for two-thirds of working time lost to absence, and one-fifth is attributed to long-term absence, defined as four weeks or more.
