A follow-up study of doctors treated at a confidential self-referral service for medical practitioners struggling with health problems finds that most carry on with their careers. However, many continue to receive treatment for mental-health problems several years after visiting the service. The study comprised doctors who self-referred to MedNet, a service for doctors and dentists at the Tavistock Clinic and Maudsley Hospital in South London. It offers a consultation and six sessions of brief therapeutic intervention. An evaluation of all consenting doctors using the service between 2002 and 2007 was carried out to find out what happened to them after completing their therapy.
