1. The exposome is defined as the accumulation of a person's exposure to environmental (including occupational) factors over their lifetime 2. In practice, taking an exposome approach to occupational health means safe-by-design workplaces, which look holistically at worker health and wellbeing, not just controlling specific workplace hazards 3. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of an exposome approach to addressing outbreaks in workplaces 4. Environmental controls, organisational practices and support for workers regarding illness are all equally important in reducing workplace transmission of COVID-19, especially in workplaces with a socioeconomically vulnerable workforce 5. A participatory approach to workplace policies - involving employees as well as employers in their design - along with communication and transparency, can ensure that risks can more effectively be evaluated and managed on a continuous basis using, for example, sensing technologies.
