■ Around four million working days are lost each year through work-related upper limb disorders ■ The epidemiology of distal arm pain appears similar to that of low back pain, with up to 50% of those presenting with symptoms still reporting pain a year on, with many of those reporting persistent symptoms and disability ■ Experience with the management of low back pain shows that historical advice to rest in bed was counterproductive; by contrast, a biopsychosocial approach with patients advised to remain active has proved effective
