Analysis by the TUC suggests that a rise, over the past five years, in the number of people working nights is predominantly due to the increase in those aged over 50 doing night work~1. Around 3.25 million people now work nights, an increase of 100,000 since 2014. Data from the Office for National Statistics indicates that there are now 924,000 night workers aged over 50 compared with 751,000 in 2014. Of these, 222,000 are aged over 60 and 69,000 are aged over 65. By contrast, the TUC says that the number of people aged 16-49 working nights has fallen by around 3% over the past five years-from 2.41 million in 2014 to 2.33 million in 2019.
