Management of Obesity and Childhood Obstructive Sleep Apnea: The Dangerous Combination

Childhood obesity is associated nwith decreased quality of life,ndepression and suicide, with-ndrawal and social problems,ncardio-vascular risk,ndiabetes, dyslipidemia, nmarkers of cardiovascular inflamma-ntion, and obstructive sleep apnea in nchildren as well as adults.nEmerging nevidence suggests that the combina-ntion of obesity and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is more detrimental than either condition nalone, in terms of long-term morbidity and mortality. This npaper summarizes the recent evidence for the dangerous nrelationship of obesity with OSA, and a rationale for early ndiagnosis and management of OSA in obese children to nreduce the risk of increasingly negative outcomes.
