摘要

From low-income neighborhoods to college cam-npuses, the fight against obesity is gaining recruits at nan accelerating pace. The mayor of New York City, nMichael Bloomberg, has not only banned trans fat in res-ntaurants, he has also increased the availability of healthy nfoods in neighborhoods where they are the hardest to find, nand raised the numbers of street vendors who sell fruits nand vegetables. In Boston, students in the Health Educa-ntion Program at Simmons College learn lifetime strategies nfor optimizing nutrition and healthy eating. Other colleges nand universities are taking similar steps, offering greater nvarieties of healthful and attractive foods, midnight break-nfasts, salad bar choices, free and easy access to nutrition ncounseling, and flexible cafeteria hours.n1n nSome of these changes have come about because stu-ndents have asked for them. They instinctively know that nunhealthy diets will make them fat. Science backs their intuition: recent data show that those with unhealthy diets nhave significantly higher energy intake (675 kcal/d) than nthose who choose healthy foods.
