摘要

Arecent study published in the American Journal ofnEpidemiology1 suggests that population-wide, sustainednweight loss could dramatically lower deathsnfrom diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The authorsnanalyzed deaths from type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, nand all causes before, during, and following Cuba’s economicncrisis of 1989–2000. The economic crisis was creatednby the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989 and Cuba’sneconomy did not recover until 2000. This era is callednthe Special Period and was associated with nonvoluntaryndeclines in energy intake and nonvoluntary increases innphysical activity. The authors searched the literature to findninformation about diet, physical activity, and mortality duringnthe period of 1980–2005 to capture the trends and thenimpact of the Special Period.
