摘要

GMO stands for genetically modified organism. They are created by taking genes from one organ ism-usually a single gene-and putting it into a recipient, usually a plant. In this way, you can introduce newtraits encoded by the gene into the plant. So, for instance, if you wanted it to grow much taller, then you would try to put in a gene that would make it grow much taller. The benefits are that it's much more precise than traditional breeding methods. You can be absolutely certain that the gene you want to go in, goes in. You can test easily that it's gone into the right place, and that it's working. And that becomes a very big advantage; it's a big advantage not to have the relatively nonprecise breeding methods that are the traditional way of doing things.
