DOE’s use of a private-sector consolidated interim storage facility for utility spent fuel could hinge in part on the department’s ability to show that such a facility could save the federal government money by allowing it to move spent fuel off reactor sites sooner than waiting for a repository, reducing its financial liability in spent fuel damage claims, according to a Washington attorney. Speaking at an Institute of Nuclear Materials Management spent fuel conference January 25 in Alexandria, Virginia, Michael McBride outlined challenges the spent fuel storage issue presents to the nuclear industry.
