Two US uranium producers seek probe of imports, relief for domestic industry

Two Colorado-based uranium producers January 16 jointly asked the US Department of Commerce to investigate uranium imports that they said threaten national security, saying uranium from state-owned or state-subsidized companies in Kazakhstan, Russia and Uzbekistan fill nearly 40% of US demand while domestic production meets less than 5%. “The domestic uranium mining industry needs U.S. government assistance to survive the foreign onslaught — particularly from Russia and Kazakhstan — that has undermined the U.S. uranium industry while new players — particularly China — will soon make the situation worse,” Energy Fuels and Ur-Energy said in the petition they jointly filed with the department.
