摘要

A bipartisan Senate bill introduced in April would provide $175 million annually over five years to communities near decommissioned reactor sites where spent fuel continues to be stored without federal programs on permanent nuclear waste disposal. The Sensible, Timely Relief for America’s Nuclear Districts’ Economic Development, or Stranded, Act, was introduced April 27 “to provide federal assistance to communities around the country that are burdened with storing stranded nuclear waste,” said Senator Kirstin Gillibrand, a New York Democrat, in a statement April 27. The legislation would authorize expenditures of $175 million annually for five years in a federal grant program to compensate communities with decommissioned nuclear power plants where spent fuel remains stored, Gillibrand said.
