The UK could deploy multiple small modular reactors at licensed nuclear sites around the country by the mid to late 2030s, two industry sources said in interviews October 8. A consortium led by Rolls-Royce is looking to construct an SMR with a capacity of around 440 MW by the early 2030s, with the first unit likely being located on the site of the former Magnox power station at Trawsfyndyd in north Wales (Nucleonics Week, 22 Aug, 1). The government of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson views this deployment as the first of multiple units that could be “relatively quickly delivered” at different sites in the country, according to one of the industry sources.
