NRC revising new reactor licensing processes to reflect lessons learned

An ongoing NRC rulemaking seeks to improve the agency’s licensing processes for new reactors by incorporating lessons learned from past reviews, including the Vogtle expansion in Georgia. During a public meeting with industry officials November 21, Anna Bradford, director of the division of new and renewed licenses in NRC’s Office for Nuclear Reactor Regulation, said the rulemaking is intended to “better align” two sets of licensing processes for power reactors and “incorporate lessons learned” from previous reviews, such as how to handle design changes made during construction, making the rulemaking “an important vehicle for improving our processes and approaches.”
