AT THE NEVADA TEST SITE……NNSA ISSUES NOTICE FOR NEW SITE-WIDE EIS

The National Nuclear Security Administration announced late last month its intent to prepare a site-wide Environmental Impact Statement (SWEIS) for continued Department of Energy/NNSA activities at the Nevada Test Site and off-site locations in the state of Nevada for a 10-year period commencing in 2010.rnThe new SWEIS will consider a No Action Alternative, Reduced Operations, Expanded Operations and Renewable Energy Operations. A public scoping period for the SWEIS will run through Oct. 16. The NNSA also plans to conduct a series of public scoping meetings in Las Vegas, Pahrump and Tonopah, Nev. and St. George, Utah, next month. "We anticipate it is going to take us about a year-and-a-half to two years to get the entire EIS process complete," DOE spokeswoman Kelly Snyder told NW&M Monitor. "The Record of Decision would be for 10 years [beginning in 2010]."
