Enamored by the cost savings that have been generated by the National Nuclear Security Administration's Supply Chain Management Center, Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman has chartered a team to explore imple-meriting some parts of the initiative across the entire Department of Energy. The effort is still in its early stages, according to DOE spokeswoman Katinka Podmaniczky, but Poneman was impressed with the success of the NNSA effort, specifically its strategic sourcing effort that has yielded cost savings by leveraging the purchasing power of the agency's seven sites. "In this era of constrained budgets, we must rethink our business processes and be creative in seeking dramatic results," Poneman said in a DOE memo, singling out the success of the NNSA's strategic sourcing initiative. He added: "I look forward to significant cost savings as a result of this initiative."
