DOD COUNTER-WMD EFFORTS URGED TO STRENGTHEN RESOURCE TRACKING

The Pentagon isn't effectively tracking the exact amount of money it spends on counterproliferation programs, the Government Accountability Office said in a report to two Congressional committees last week that raised questions about how effectively the Department of Defense was allocating resources for combating the spread of weapons of mass destruction. In a Sept. 28 letter to Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.), the GAO said that while the Pentagon every two years puts together a list of programs "strongly related torncombating WMD" and related costs through its Counterproliferation Program Review Committee, it can't identify exactly how much of its resources go toward counterproliferation efforts and provides information only on budget requests-not the actual amount of money appropriated by Congress each year.
