NPT REVIEW CONFERENCE ENDS WITH AGREEMENT, 'MODEST' PROGRESS

Delegates left the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference in New York late last month with a consensus document signed by each of the 189 member countries, one that nuclear nonproliferation experts say makes modest progress on advancing the Obama Administration's nuclear nonproliferation agenda. The consensus document includes a provision calling on the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom-the five nuclear weapons countries that are part of the NPT-to "accelerate concrete progress" on nuclear disarmament, a slight twist on one of the treaty's pillars that calls on the countries to work toward nuclear abolition.
