摘要

As the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board beginsrngearing up to take a new look at whether workers acrossrnthe Department of Energy complex feel safe to raisernconcerns, one Board member warned this week that therernis no “magic bullet” for ensuring a strong safety culture, and instead stressed the necessity of “leadership.” DNFSBrnMember Sean Sullivan made his remarks during a Boardrnmeeting held in Washington intended to give the Board arnchance to hear from an industry expert, as well as representativesrnfrom the Nuclear Regulatory Commission andrnNASA, on various ways to assess and address safetyrnculture issues. Sullivan, though, appeared to be highlyrnskeptical at the onset of the meeting. “As I understand thernpurpose of this hearing, we’re supposed to be gatheringrninformation that may be used in a subsequent hearing withrnthe Department of Energy to enlighten them on ways tornimprove their safety culture. To be honest, I don’t believernanyone can say anything—myself included—in this roomrnin the next few hours that could fulfill that purpose,” hernsaid in his opening remarks.
