In a much-anticipated interim report, a high-level panel charged with finding solutions for storing America's high-level nuclear waste suggests building regional storage sites to warehouse spent nuclear fuel for up to 100 years as the federal government works to find a more permanent burial spot. Moreover, money that nuclear utilities have long paid the federal government for a storage solution should be spent on these options, instead of being used for the federal budget deficit, suggests President Obama's "Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future."
