NRC Directs Staff To Develop EIS In Response to Appeals Court Ruling

In response to a federal appeals court ruling, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has directed the agency's staff to develop an environmental impact statement (EIS) and a revised waste confidence decision and rule on the temporary storage of spent nuclear fuel. The NRC issued the "staff requirements memorandum" on Sept. 6. The environmental impact statement and rule are to be completed within 24 months. On June 8, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit held that federal law requires the commission to complete a review of the public health, safety and environmental hazards long-term storage of nuclear waste would pose to communities before allowing such storage.
