Officials at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report the agency likely will not meet its projected deadline for cleaning up radioactive liquid waste at the Idaho National Laboratory at Idaho Falls. Tom D'Agostino, DOE undersecretary for nuclear security, reported the expected failure is because of a delay in putting a facility constructed to treat and package the sodium-bearing waste into operation. DOE had hoped to have the Integrated Waste Treatment Unit (IWTU) working and treating 900,000 gallons of the waste for removal by Dec. 31.
