If Scotland decides to leave the United Kingdom, Great Britain's parting gift to the independent nation could be 50 train loads of nuclear waste, a Labour Party member of Parliament reports. The Scottish National Party is seeking a referendum on restoring Scotland to independent status in two years. Jamie Reed says it would be against British law for for the nation to retain nuclear waste from a "foreign country," and that an independent Scotland would have a "legal and moral responsibility" to take back waste from six current and historic nuclear reactors at Dounreay, Hunterston, Torness and Chapelcross. Alternatively, Reed reported, Scottish taxpayers would have to contribute toward the cost of storing of nuclear material in England.
