German lawmakers approved legislation to allow a commission of experts to conduct a search for nuclear waste disposal site, and to halt shipments of radioactive material to the Gorleben waste storage site, at least temporarily. The Bundestag, Germany's lower house of parliament, approved the legislation before adjourning for its summer recess. The Bundesrat, the upper house, is expected to approve the legislation this month. Critics of the current repository at Gorleben in Lower Saxony have repeatedly called on the government to find a safer location. The legislation provides for the government to appoint a group of approximately 30 experts to oversee the search.
