DOE Floats Proposal To Remove Radioactive Waste from Hanford Site

The Department of Energy (DOE) has floated a proposal to remove some radioactive waste from leaking tanks at the Hanford nuclear site and send it to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico.Federal officials announced they are considering shipping approximately 3.1 million gallons of radioactive waste from Hanford for disposal in the WIPP near Carlsbad, N.M., where radioactive materials are buried in rooms excavated in salt beds nearly a half-mile underground.
