Polonium-210, identified as the source of the radiation, was also found in trace quantities in a number of locations in London. Analysis of samples taken from Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian intelligence officer who died in London on November 23, identified high levels of polonium-210 as the likely cause of death. British police are treating the death as a deliberate poisoning. There are suspicions of a possible political connection with Russia, as Litvinenko, a critic of the Putin regime, had fled the country some six years ago fearing for his life.
