Reid, Hatch Introduce Thorium Fuel Cycle Bill

A champion in the fight against the opening of the Department of Energy's Yucca Mountain repository has cosponsored a bill that pushes for a thorium fuel cycle, in part because it produces less waste than the uranium fuel cycle. Sen. Harry Reid (D., Nev.), who as recently as late September testified before a Senate committee about what he called the dangers associated with the DOE's proposal to ship 77 000 tons of spent fuel and high-level waste to Yucca Mountain, on October 2 joined Sen. Orrin Hatch (R., Utah) in introducing legislation that would pave the way for thorium-fueled reactors in the United States.
