The research of nine graduate students awarded fellowships will focus on the separation of nuclear waste components and recycling, among other things. The Department of Energy will award up to $405 000 in fellowships to nine graduate students at U.S. universities as part of the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI). The fellowships, valued at up to $45 000 each over two academic years, will support research aimed at closing the nuclear fuel cycle in the United related to the fuel cycle, including the separation of nuclear waste components, the fabrication of recycled components into reactor fuel, and the preparation of new waste forms with increased long-term stability.
