摘要

It was announced on March 25 that NRG Energy, a merchant electricity provider in the United States, has formed a subsidiary, Nuclear Innovation North America LLC (NINA), to focus on the marketing, siting, financing, and development of Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (ABWR) for customers in North America (which should be taken to include Canada and Mexico, as well as the United States). At the unveiling of NINA, it was stated further that Toshiba Corporation, of Japan, will invest $300 million in NINA over the next six years and will receive a 12 percent equity ownership. While NINA might become a key player in the expansion of nuclear power in the United States, in the near term the most significant aspect of the NRG-Toshiba pact is its effect on the ABWR project already under way at the South Texas Project site, of which NRG is the largest owner.
